Even Wrestling is Bigger in Texas #1

We have reached the final destination of the Wrestling Hot Spots countdown. No other state has had the massive impact that Texas has had on the wrestling business. Not only has the state produced a lot of wrestlers but they have produced the most impact players. Names like Tito Santana, Barry Windham and Tully Blanchard all hail from the Lone Star state and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

When we talk all time greats Texas is definitely not short on them. It would safe to say that at anybody's top 10 there are at least 4 Texas wrestlers. Guys like The Undertaker, Shawn Micheals and Stone Cold Steve Austin are all proud Texans. The area has been home also to some of the most prominent wrestling promotions ever. Most notably World Class Championship Wrestling which was ran by Fritz Von Erich. The state has also hosted some of the biggest events in the history of the business.

Wrestling Is a Family Affair
When a Texas wrestling family says that its in their in blood they mean it. Professional wrestling has always had its fair share of families in the business but no other place has had as many big name families as the Lone Star state. Last names that have had generational impact in the business like Dibiase, Rhodes and Funk all started in Texas. Decided to list some of my favorite clans from the Longhorn state.

The Funk Family
Can not talk about Texas and wrestling without mentioning the Funk family. Dory Funk Sr, Dory Funk Jr and Terry Funk have made a major impact in the business. Terry and Dory Jr hold the distinction of being the only brothers who have both held the NWA World Heavyweight title. Terry was also big influence on hardcore wrestlers and was a big part of popularity of the original ECW. Dory Jr is a trainer and has trained such high profile stars like Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy and Edge.
Dusty Rhodes Talking Terry Funk

The Von Erichs
One of the most legendary families ever in the wrestling business were the Von Erichs. Headed by patriarch Fritz Von Erich they set Dallas,TX and the world on fire. Fritz was a legendary wrestler who also became a legendary promoter of World Class Championship Wrestling. His sons Kerry, Kevin and David were major stars of WCCW and were know world wide. WWE fans may be most familiar with Kerry who spent some time as the Texas Tornado and won the Intercontinental Championship.

The Guerrero Family
Although largely associated with Mexico the legendary Guerrero family was from El Paso, TX. This family is 3 generations deep in the business and helped bring the Lucha Libre style to the United States. Headed by the great Gory Guerrero who then ushered his four sons into the business. The Guerrero family has been apart of almost every major wrestling promotion. The most famous being the late Eddie Guerrero a former WWE Champion.

The Legend of West Texas State Football
The football team at West Texas State University has a surprising knack of turning out standout professional wrestlers. They maybe the school that has turned out the most NWA World Heavyweight Champions.

Weekly DVD Suggestions

When I started this blog it was for wrestling fans like myself. Fans that watched wrestling currently and loved the history of professional wrestling. One of the great resources for fans who love the history of the sport are the DVD, especially the ones put out by the WWE. So I decided to introduce a weekly segment on the blog that will suggest some of my favorite DVDs. This will not be a review but just the stories that I like and think that other wrestling fans will like.

The first DVD I am recommending is "The Triumph and Tragedy of World Class Championship Wrestling". It goes into the story of one of the most popular wrestling territories ever. Based out of Texas and headed by Fritz Von Erich and featured his sons prominently. The DVD covers the origin of the organization and the families history in wrestling. Also covered is the other major superstars like Manny Fernandez, Bruiser Brody and other wrestlers who had major impacts on the business that came through WCCW.
Also they discuss the storied rivalry of The Von Erichs and The Fabulous Freebirds. This story is a good one to see if you are familiar with WCCW or just want to see what all the hype was about.

Money In The Bank Review

The Money In The Bank pay per view was one of the most high anticipated events in the past few years. I would even go as far to say that it is the biggest non Wrestlemania show in the last 5 years. The event did not disappoint. I give it an A grade.

Smackdown Money In The Bank Match
The Smackdown Money in The Bank match was used to kick off the show. Starting the show with this match was great to get the blood pumping and also add to speculation that a briefcase may get cashed in. It was a lot back and forth action that kept the fans on their toes. The match allowed you to believe that any one of these guys could have won the match. The winner was surprise when Daniel Bryan was able to take down the magic briefcase. Can't wait to see where they take Bryan with this and how they book him.

Kelly Kelly vs Brie Bella for Diva's Title
This match was decent for what the WWE usually does with Diva's matches on PPV's. They utilized their time well and Kelly Kelly retained her title.

Mark Henry vs The Big Show
This was a solid match to be on of the filler matches for the event. Mark Henry did a good job further establishing himself as a monster as he defeated The Big Show.

Raw Money In The Bank Match
The Raw Money In The Bank match started off a little silly as the participants started fighting with mini ladders. After the match got rolling it told a good story with lots of action. Kofi Kingston and Rey Mysterio put on awesome performances. The winner was Alberto Del Rio, which was not a surprise but the build up was great.

Christian vs Randy Orton for World Heavyweight Title
This is the 3rd time that Christian has met Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Title on Pay Per View. This match was just as good and the previous two and they found a way to tell a different story. With the special stipulation that if Randy Orton got disqualified he would lose the title. With Christian playing up his plan for the past few weeks on Smackdown and executing that plan to perfection was awesome to see. Christian had to win for this storyline to stay fresh. This feud should last solidly throughout the summer.

John Cena vs CM Punk for The WWE Title
The most anticipated main event in recent WWE history did not disappoint as CM Punk and John Cena put on an excellent show. CM Punk worked his hometown Chicago crowd to perfection. He also debuted his new best in the world t-shirt. The crowd was very hostile to John Cena, which was reminiscent of his match with RVD at One Night Stand. The match was a great back and forth story just way too many finishers that didn't finish either guy. Vince McMahon made his presence felt in that match towards the which opened the door for Punk to hit the GTS on Cena. Mr. McMahon tried to orchestrate a screw job ending that was unsuccessful and also tried to get a MITB winner to cash in which was also unsuccessful.
This adds an excellent element to the story. I am proud of WWE taking the challenging road not just giving the title back to Super Cena. There are limitless possibilities to this ending.

Destination X Review

Overall this a decent pay per view. It was some moments of awesome mixed with some moments of "WTF". Its a hard sell to have a PPV that does not expand on any of your story lines or that has your fans emotional investment. You saw a Pay Per View full of guys that you will not see on television on a regular basis. Overall I give it a C + grade.

Kazarian defeated Samoa Joe
The show opens up with Kazarian vs Samoa Joe. A good match to start the show and get the blood flowing. These two did not disappoint and had a pretty fast paced, back and forth match. Kazarian ended up defeating Joe. Do not effect this will have in the Bound 4 Glory series

Douglas Williams defeated Mark Haskins
This match was okay but like most of this pay per view there was nothing to latch on too.

Eric Young and Shark Boy defeated Generation Me
Nothing really to talk about here. Generation Me was released from TNA after the match.

Alex Shelley won The Ultimate X Match
This a pretty fast past match that lived up to the hype. It consisted of Amazing Red, Robbie E, Alex Shelly and Shannon Moore. These were 4 competitors that you don't see much of on TNA television but they still put on a good match. Alex was joined by his injured tag team partner Chris Sabin to celebrate.

Rob Van Dam defeated Jerry Lynn
This had to be the match of the night. Van Dam and Lynn put on an awesome show and had the crowd hooked. Van Dam ends up winning with a 5 star frog splash.

Austin Aries defeated Low Ki, Jack Evans and Zema Ion
With it being so hard to follow the previous match these 4 men did not disappoint. TNA should sign all of these gentlemen but the problem is that they will not use them.

X Title: Brian Kendrick defeated Abyss to win the title
This match sucked and pretty much pissed away the hard work of the previous 2 matches.

Main Event: AJ Styles defeated Christopher Daniels
What was supposed to be a classic was a dud.

Canada Takes #2 in Wrestling Hot Spots

On the list of wrestling hotspots we find ourselves spending time with our northern neighbors. Yes the wonderful country of Canada is the home of some of the greatest wrestlers that we have ever seen. Canada has brought us guys like Dino Bravo, Robert Roode and The Rogue Brothers.

The Hart of Canada
There is one clear and dominate wrestling family in Canada and that is the Harts. The Hart family is responsible for training some of the greatest starts that have ever been in wrestling in their famed Dungeon. Led by patriarch Stu Hart they set the standard for excellence in wrestling. The Dungeon has produced names like Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Superstar Billy Graham and Brian Pillman. But the most famous Hart graduates are probably Stu's children. Bret and Owen Hart went on to become legends in wrestling business.
One of Stu's greatest creations was his promotion Stampede Wrestling. It was the launching pad for The British Bulldogs(Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith) and The Hart Foundation(Bret Hart and Jim Niedhart). Wrestlers like Jake Roberts, Junkyard Dog and Abdullah The Butcher all have spent time in Hart's promotion.

The Hart Family is still putting great wrestlers who are keeping the tradition of wrestling excellence alive. David Hart Smith, Tyson Kidd and Natalya Niedhart all are currently on the WWE active roster and making waves in pro wrestling.

My Favorite Canadian Wrestler
Chris Jericho is one of the best wrestlers that I have ever seen. He has wrestled in ECW (the original), WCW and in the WWE. Winning championships everywhere he has been. He was worked with and fueded with some of the best of all time. Names like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Meysterio and Triple H are on the list for Jericho. Chris also maybe one of the top 5 in mic skills all time. His promos are cutting edge and can trade lines with any superstar in history. He also the lead singer of the band Fozzy who travels all over the world rocking and rolling.

Great Canadian Wrestlers
